{personality}

Jack was not always a psychopath -- well ok, he was, but he was once less of a psychopath and more of an cog who spun in the machine just a bit too quickly for the liking of its operator. Jack's beginnings were not humble. He carries scars from an abusive childhood, having been abandoned by his mother (after his father died) to his psychotic grandmother who killed his cat (because it "didn't make his bed" in the words of Jack) and disciplined him with a makeshift "discipline stick", which had a sawblade on the end of it. Jack doesn't speak much about his family, but its clear that he's learned that the way you deal with people disagreeing with you is to kick the everliving shit out of them (emotionally and physically) until they see things your way.

It worked for his grandmother, why wouldn't it work for him?

But his abusive beginnings also imprinted a more refined taste upon him. Jack dislikes anarchy and believes he has the best ideas at all times. He's also incredibly crafty and intelligent, spending most of his childhood coding in his grandmother's shadow and eventually worming his way into the Hyperion corporation as a programmer. That's where things started to go bad.

Surviving in Hyperion means clawing your way up the corporate ladder, a task that is not small or easy when you're working for a cutthroat weapons manufacturer. Jack's cunning comes in handy for this, and he manipulates his way into power through a series of somewhat shady deeds that eventually point to the existence of treasure vaults on the planet Pandora. Helios is commissioned so that Jack and Hyperion may observe Pandora for alien activity, and Jack's ego grows even further. He's making something of himself, and he's going to be hailed as a hero.
